Goongarrie Station is not far north of Rowles Lagoon but getting there involves crossing an ecological boundary. From the stately tall eucalypts of the Great Western Woodlands to the acacia and allocasuarina and mallee of the ‘mulga’ area. Water is scarce – the only water we saw was in a deep green gnamma. A sandy creek bed showed that it must rain here sometime.
Goongarrie is another former pastoral station that didn’t last too long due to lack of water sources, and the property was sold to the State Government for conservation decades ago.
The sheds and yards, the cottages and homestead are all in a picturesque state of slow decay.
