I am really delighted to have a piece published in the Overland Literary Journal. I gave them this piece with an extremely lame title ‘Are the child free just a late modern phenomenon’ and they come up with ‘Baby booms and fallow wombs: the false history of child free.’ How good is that title? I am very very bad at titles.
The response on Facebook was surprisingly positive and kind of weirdly interesting. If I could sum up the whole point of this whole piece it is to say ‘can there please be a small part of the conversation about women’s lives that recognises that many women will not be mothers, and that there have always been women who have not been mothers.’ And then a few people comment on this piece only about their experience as mothers and nothing in relation to the point about not-mothering. It took some self control not to yell with all caps ‘You are just proving my point!!!’
